JU JUTSU

Ju Jutsu is the ancient Japanese art of self-defence used by the Samurai in feudal Japan. Jan de Jong Ju Jutsu is a comprehensive, current and practical system of self-defence which can be described as an unarmed self-defence system that can be applied against armed or unarmed assailants. The range of techniques is vast and the combinations and variations are endless.

AIKIDO

Aikido at Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness places an emphasis on the smooth, flowing and circular movements that are typical of Aikido with a very dynamic and practical application. We recognise the need to offer solutions against the more common attacks such as punches, kicks and weapons. We are proud to offer a balance that recognises measured and reasonable responses to any given situation within the principles of traditional Aikido.

SPECIALISED & CORPORATE GROUPS

Ideal for professions such as police, security officers, mine site controllers, journalists, nurses or any other groups or individuals requiring specific training outcomes.

“I walked in the door of the Jan de Jong dojo looking for a martial art that could help me practice mindfulness. I use the word practice deliberately as I wanted something that I could work at long term. The Jan de Jong dojo community that Maggie Sensei and Paul Sensei have gathered around them is welcoming and inclusive and every time I walk through that door I know I am in the right place.”

“Thank you, Maggie, for running a fantastic self-defence course for girls over the school holidays. My girls were at first very reluctant, but after I convinced them to join the course, they now agree that it was both worthwhile and enjoyable. The format and content of the course is perfect for beginners to the concept of self-defence (as my girls are) and would also be a good refresher for anyone who has done a course like this before. I think my girls discovered a new confidence in the way they can use their bodies and their voices to deal with confronting situations. I’m hoping my kids will never have to use the skills that you have taught them, but it gives me some comfort to know that they have a few tricks in their back pocket after the course. Now I’m waiting to sign up for the self-defence course for women.”

I started training in self defence mid 2002 with Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness. Two of the main reasons I chose to train at Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness was its well respected reputation and the high level of martial arts knowledge displayed by its instructors. I have found that the school’s method of training is appropriate to the level of the student, enabling one to reach his potential in a safe environment. Although there is an inherent risk associated with training in martial arts, I have found that there is a great emphasis placed on safe training practices. I found my instructor, Paul Connolly sensei, to be a person of high integrity and professionalism. He also teaches at a high level and his knowledge of the arts of self defence is obvious.

Our eight year old son, who is on the spectrum, has been doing Ju Jutsu classes with Maggie and Paul at Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness for two years. Under Maggie’s calm and skilled tutelage, our son has learnt to listen respectfully, focus and concentrate, and has developed sequencing, gross motor and self-defence skills. He recently earned his first belt, with his classmates, a wonderful achievement for all the students! Our son is now working towards his second belt. Maggie and Paul provide an engaging and supportive instructive environment, where they presume competence and all students are encouraged to learn and achieve to the best of their ability. Our son loves attending his weekly classes, and the development of his skills, and his increased confidence, has been heartening to observe. It has also been wonderful to see his relationship with Maggie develop over this time, and to see him welcomed into an inclusive community that celebrates his strengths and unique qualities. Maggie and Paul are always happy to work with us to ensure our son is well supported and to try new approaches and techniques to teach him. We highly recommend Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness.

It is with great pleasure that I write a letter of recommendation for Paul Connolly and Jan de Jong Martial Arts. Having worked for many years in social work and as a mentor and social trainer, predominantly with young people coming into contact with the justice system, usually engaged in the use of alcohol and other drugs and suffering mental distress, I am aware of how difficult it can be to gain trust and support positive changes. Over the last eight months I have been working with a young man who was all but given up on by mental health and drug and alcohol services and at one stage was deemed, by a head psychiatrist of a government clinic, ‘the most dangerous person in the state.’ Throughout the 34 years of his life, and from a young age, this person has been given numerous diagnosis and a multitude of different medications. His self-esteem and ability to cope in the world was severely damaged and he was in constant defence mode, partially due to having been bullied from a young age. The only form of communication this young man had was one of physical aggression and inappropriate language which had completely isolated him from family and society as a whole. School attendance was minimal at best and his mother was forced to home school, with great difficulty, for the duration of these years.

This is to confirm that I recently engaged the services of Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness to provide nine weeks of self defence training for two groups of 15 people. The program was very successful and I highly recommend the services of Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness to anyone seriously considering learning self defence or wishing to improve their risk management profile. The most impressive outcomes of the course included the development of knowledge and skills to Diffuse potentially critically dangerous situations through the use of both verbal and body language techniques Quickly and effectively immobilise offenders with significant strength and weight advantages Quickly and effectively disarm offenders wielding weapons Attack and defend with various common objects The instructors are extremely passionate and committed to the study and training of their Martial arts. Students were able to immediately built rapport with the instructors and were able to seek additional consultation and advice when requested. Students of all shapes and sizes received strong encouragement and support throughout the learning program. The experience as a whole with Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness was very effective and efficient and, I have no hesitation in recommending the services of Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness

We have been a part of Jan de Jong Dojo for the past 5 years, and it has been a greatly positive and rewarding experience for both of my sons and family. All of the Sensei, and in particular Sensei Maggie, are incredible, especially when dealing with children. They are very knowledgeable and have a great ability to bring out the best in children of all levels and abilities. They work to develop students physically, mentally and spiritually, and are encouraging, extremely patient, caring and genuinely interested in each child. At the same time, they make classes fun and manage to keep children interested and excited about learning and conquering new skills. My son especially benefited from learning self-confidence and focus, and how to protect himself, how to handle a bullying situation, be disciplined and respectful. Learning how to fall properly and protect his head is invaluable. Dojo has a family feel that is very warm and welcoming to both new and existing students. I appreciate the values being taught here and modelled by Sensei Maggie and Paul, and I am planning on being a part of Jan de Jong family for many more years to come as I feel it will prepare my boys for their future lives.

Being someone of more advanced years, as well as being a member of Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness, I find, apart from the obvious advantage of receiving instruction in a sophisticated and effective self defence system, that there are other valuable benefits to be gained from this school. Fitness, agility and the desire to continually learn are important things to maintain as we get older; while being involved with people of good character and integrity is of the utmost importance no matter what age you may be. I have gained all this and much more from my involvement with the instructors and fellow students at Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness.

I have been a student with Jan de Jong for 12 years. It has been rewarding on many levels. I have learned effective self-defence skills based on the art of jujutsu, which is particularly suited to me as it emphasises efficiency over power (I am only of average size and strength). The training has given me new insights into what the body can do e.g. I can now be thrown overhead (flipped), re-orientate and land on my side or back safely. My friends have noticed benefits to my physique and poise. Last but not least, I have formed valuable relationships with my teachers (particularly Paul and Maggie) and my fellow students, who all do whatever they can to support my learning and general well-being. I will not hesitate to recommend Jan de Jong as a means to personal growth
